Author: admin
Dreaming of purchasing a yacht to get away from it all, but don’t think your budget can handle the cost of a new sailboat? You might be wise to consider checking into all the used sailboats for sale because you could be happily amazed how affordable they are, especially compared to the cost of a normal car. Because of the big sailing boom in the 1980′s, the market has been flooded with used boats — scores of which beautifully cared for and still in great condition — even though they are decades old.
A real incentive for looking into pre-owned yachts is they generally come with all the extra equipment — the type of added equipment that can truly add up if you purchase a new boat from the boat dealer. It is also a relief, principally for a novice, to not need to conduct the necessary homework to find the right type of sails, radios and other important items necessary to properly outfit a new yacht. Despite the fact that it is possible that the equipment might be 15 years old and in need of repair, you will have the advantage of knowing what is functioning, or what is non-operational on the model of used yacht you purchase.
Just like another used piece of equipment, you will need to exercise caution when shopping for used sailboats since there is always the possibility that there are serious deficiencies that has prompted the owner to sell to sidestep impending restoration cost. Certainly prior to you putting any money down, you will want to do a comprehensive inspection and even take it for a cruise, because pictures and sales copy can be purposefully incorrect.
Locating good quality used yachts for sale starts with investigating the various shopping channels such as internet postings, classified ads and some good old fashioned word of mouth advice because there are no systemized prices or categories. With proper thought to pricing trends and research on the availability and price range of certain sailboat models, the consumer quickly can create a knowledge of the current market.
Another great source for pre-owned yachts in Canada are the regional publications that cater to the sailing community, like “Canadian Yachting”, “The Ontario Sailor” and “L’Escale Nautique”. The classified parts in the publications frequently list quality sailboats for resale. Also the popular magazine Boat for Sale publishes an annual pricing guide that includes the up-to-date values of common used yachts in the country.
Professional sailboat dealers can also be invaluable if you ensure they are experienced, because anyone can call themselves a dealers. Once you determine they have knowledge that could help you get the best price, it will be worth the extra costs related to their service. Not only will they aide both the buyer and seller get the a fair deal, they can ensure that your hunt for a pre-owned sailboat is focused on vessels that are exactly right to suit your individual needs.

Designed by famed naval architect Ted Geary this boat was built by the Lake Union Dry Dock and Machine Works of Seattle, WA, in 1930. The Lake Union Co. built many of the most respected Classic Yachts produced on the West Coast before the 2nd World War. This beautiful 45 footer is an outstanding example of the breed. She was originally built and launched at their famous yard on the shores of Seattles Lake Union. The Lake Unions were built by the outstanding Pacific Northwest craftsmen of the period to withstand the rigors of the northern waters and out of woods so fine that they are simply no longer available; in general, these boats tend to be more robust, and of heavier scantlings than most classics. It is not known how many 45 foot bridge deck cruisers were built by the Lake Union Dry Dock Company, but only five are known to exist today, including two built in 1928 and two others built in 1929. This vessel is the only 1930 model known to be still in existence. We consider her to be an exceptional buy in an Antique Cruiser and a highly desirable yacht, as well as being a Pacific Northwest and West Coast Treasure.
