If 2 cruising yachts are sailing in the opposite direction, right of way is given to the vessel on the starboard tack (wind blowing over the right side of the yacht) unless there is a dangerous and obvious impediment. One boat passing another must give way to the boat it is overtaking.

In order to keep the waterways secure and relaxing for everybody, it is a sound idea to research your boat and the rules that you should follow when operating your boat. However, jumping aboard and turning the key without any genuine understanding of the natural and man made worlds that become combined puts everyone, and your investment, in jeopardy.
