A breif explanation of the sport:

Eagle is the number one race hull but there are others racing. Kwikraft is a New Zealand hull designed and built by Tony Ward, 19 to 21 foot tunnel. There also is at least one Doug Riddle hull still racing and there are several unique one-offs, the two built by River Wild are good examples. One is a 21 foot B-class tunnel and the other is an 18 foot FX class tunnel.

Bottoms are anywhere from .160 to 3/16ths. Sometimes AR plating is used as an extra layer of protection. Sides are generally .090, decks can be even less than that. Saving weight is very important and the location of the weight in the boat is even more important. Most use spoons, an add on piece in front of the intake. Hulls are generally tunnels although v-hulls have done well in FX class, and River Wild has built two super light “semi-wing in ground effect” hulls that are also quite good. The FX version did especially good in 2001. I believe the Eagle 19 foot Sport step-tech will become a big force in FX class in the next few years.

Since these boats are raced through whitewater interspersed with rocks and logs, they need to have fairly precise handling characteristics compared to other types of race boats. They also need to be very predictable. Bad habits and quirks can put you up in the rocks or worse.

The pumps are obvously highly modified, but based on Berkeley, Legend, Aggressor or American Turbine production pumps. Stainless impellers are almost universal. Full rock grates, although again highly modified, are also universal. On the higher powered boats much attention is applied to supplying the thrust bearing with lots of clean lube. Various methods are used for this including pumps and pressure lube systems. Fabricated steel nozzles are used almost exclusively, and various combinations of wedges. The nozzle replaces the entire piece from the bowl back. It’s probably obvious, but maybe it needs stating, the black art of this racing is the pumps and the hulls.

The engines are pretty straight forward. They have to make good horsepower and torque at less than about 6500 rpm, but they have to be able to do this fully loaded down at full throttle for up to 30 minutes. They have to be able to do this reliably at least twice a day (sometimes more) and for two days in a row. That’s the minimum requirement to finish and you know the saying, “to finish first, first you have to finish”. Rumour has it, and it’s only rumour that I’ve heard, that some of the unlimited engines are over 650 cubic inches!

Engines and pumps are set way back, most of the pump hangs out the back of the boat. Fuel tanks sizes range from 25 to 35 gallons for an FX boat to 60 to 100 gallons for an Unlimited boat. Usually they are set up as saddle tanks, at the very back of the hull.

Most boats have run rollbars in the past and it is now a requirement. Most are made out of aluminum and have double or triple hoops with back braces. Perhaps we may see a move towards chrome moly construction as the anchoring and hoop requirements begin to make them a good tradeoff weightwise. Five point harnesses with lever locks are also a requirement, not to mention a good idea. Race type lifejackets from Lifeline and Security are also used as are fire suits.

All boats carry first aid kits, fire extinguishers, two ropes, paddles, tools, some minor spares and a red flag.

We took a ride along one of the many jet boat touring companies last week. We climbed aboard a 1000 horsepowered jet boat in Gold Beach Oregon. Lots of wildlife people in their swimsuits enjoying the late summer days of summer. This outfit is located in Gold Beach Oregon. The boat is a 27 foot aluminum river boat with three engines in it. They run Chevy vortec motors in these boats. You are guaranteed a wet and wild ride aboard one of these aluminum river boats. The wildlife included brown bears, american bald eagles, fish ducks, and osprey. The scenery was also first class rated on this trip. We experienced numerous waterfalls along the way,With a tree that grows on a rock. The boat ride also included a dinner on your downriver run. The pilot would also perform the famous 360 spinout in the boat. The whole trip on the river was an astounding 104 miles round trip. We left at 12:00pm. and were back where we started at around 8:00 p.m. We also came across a few rafters enjoying the whitewater action on our way up river. This river is also popular with the steelhead fishermen in the late fall. The history learned about the indians and the many lodges upriver was pretty cool too. If you want to have a good time out in the great outdoors this is one trip you must book. This is a trip your whole family can enjoy! This video is edited to music also.

The river this video was filmed in, is called the Angelina River. It goes from Lake Sam Rayburn Dam to Steinhagen Reservoir (also called Dam B) in East Texas.

Years ago my buddies and I used to go camping in the marshes and bayous of Southeast Texas. I’am hoping to start going camping on the rivers and bayous again.

1st test run of the weedwhacker boat. It leaked alot and the engine was having a hard time, but we got it to work. Definitely needs some work.

UPDATE: The boat sank a few weeks after this video about 2 miles downstream due to a large load and alot of leaks. As captain of the vessel I stood inside as it sank into the river, while my friends stood on the dry shore and laughed at my misfortune.

Additionally, here are some answers to some common questions/comments:

-why did you use particle board?
While we know particle board is certainly not the best choice for boating materials, it was also the cheapest and lightest material at the hardware store, making it perfect for our budget summer project. Additionally believe it or not the wood worked quite well with the addition of our waterproof sealer, and was a decision I would make again in a heartbeat.

-why couldn’t you get the motor started? Are you stupid or something?
Ok lets get a few things straight: First off the engine was a 28CC 2 stroke diaphragm carb engine that had been sitting in a garage WITH gas in the carburetor for at least three years. When we got the engine I had to essentially rebuild the carb because the gas had varnished so badly. Not less than five minutes after I had finished on the engine did we decide to take the boat out. This said I had very little time to adjust high and low speed mixture screws, hence the inability to start the engine before we dock it the first time. YES I do know what a choke and primer are, I have been to state competition for small engine maintenance and repair so suck my fat one.

-What’s wrong with the kid with the paddles?
He has alot of problems, please don’t be mean to him

-How did you attach the prop?
The propeller was an OEM replacement for a trolling motor. The weedwhacker shaft was threaded at the end so we simply found the right bolt and stuck it through the prop. If you ever attempt this MAKE SURE you use a weedwhacker with a clutch, as one without will simply die once it touches the water.

-Wait a weedeater with a clutch? No way!
Are you illiterate? Yes there most certainly are weedwhackers with centrifugal clutches, and IMO they should all be made this way.

-Do you guys always swear at each other this much?
Yes

-Will you ever make a new one?
We wanted to make one this summer (of 08) but may not have time. Hopefully next summer so keep watching for it

This is a video I took of the aftermath of the boat crash in Old Saybrook, CT on 7-8-07. It shows a boat catching a rope on the other boats prop and in turn, stopping the boat going around, but the “tow boat” flips over throwing three people into the water.

Rafting the river rapids is a major adrenaline rush. If you are going to hit the rapids, you need to know some of the basic language thrown around in the sport. The Basics of Rafting The River Rapids. As with any sport, it helps to have a basic understanding of the tools of the trade, techniques and such. Not only does this help you sound like you know what you are doing, but it actually gives you some insight into the process. Let’s take a look at some of the key components. Dry Bag ?A dry bag is a waterproof bag you can keep things in on the raft such as wallets, keys and such. Water is going to get all over the boat, so consider yourself warned. Most whitewater rafting companies provide them with trips. CFS ?This abbreviation refers to cubic feet per second, a measure of the speed and ferocity of the current. The more cubic feet of water moving per second, the more aggressive the rapids and, in my humble opinion, the more fun! Eddie ?An eddie is an area where the current stops or heads back up stream. This typically occurs on the down current side of boulders. It can be a good place to collect yourself for the next rapids. Gradient. This term refers to the general verticality of the river. This higher gradient means faster water and typically a more exhilarating ride.

It is typically found at the bottom of a fall or behind a large obstacle where the gradient is high and the CFS is large. Rapid. This is why you live to whitewater raft. Rapids are turbulent areas of the water which gives the sport its name. You pop in, out, over and every which way through them. Life-Jacket ?A flotation device. Wear them always. Don't try to be cool. If you get thrown from the raft, which can happen, these will save you. This is particularly true if you smack your head on something. This short list of terms should give you a head start on enjoying your trip. Get out there and fling yourself down one of Mother Nature's roller coasters.
