A Basic Overview on Kayaks and Kayaking
Author: admin
Kayaking is growing in popularity. It is a sport with a lot of variations, which are covered below in this article. A Basic Overview of Kayaks and Kayaking .At its core, kayaking is simply a method of propelling oneself through a body of water by using ones own power. A paddle is used to do this with the paddle usually having two curved portions on each side to allow for a back and forth action unlike canoeing. This definition, however, fails in many ways since there are extremely different types of kayaking. Let'stake a look. Kayak roughly means hunting boat. It has been used throughout history by people living on shores to pursue food in the ocean. The indigenous people in the Arctic are believed to have been the first kayakers using wood frames covered by animal skins. In modern times, kayaking refers to a much broader scope of activities. That being said, the basic boat remains the same. Kayaks are long, thin and usually one person boats. They come in different forms and styles, which are primarily adapted to a particular style of kayaking.
Sea kayaks are very long and thin, which helps them glide easily through the water. Kayaks designed for running challenging river rapids, on the other hand, are short to facilitate maneuverability and the opportunity to roll to upright oneself after being flipped upside down. While almost all kayaks are designed to have the person sit down in them, a certain class allows the person to site on a flat indention on the top of the kayak. Obviously, this type of kayaking is typically done on smooth surfaces such as lakes. As these designs seem to suggest, kayaking comes in a lot of forms. Some people love to take them out on a cruise around a bay in Alaska or any ocean areas. Other kayaking enthusiasts prefer to shoot the rapids of extreme rivers and will travel all over the world to do so.Kayaking is a huge adrenaline rush or a relaxing way to see sites up close and personal. You just have to make your choice, get out there and go.

This is the first chapter of our little day sailer; recently bought on eBay. This film was taken the day I brought it home after purchasing it in Southold, New York. We live very close to Bellport Bay on Long Island. It is very shallow here, and we cannot have a boat with a large keel (ours has a swing keel). This boat also easily becomes a little motor boat, as you will see in my next video, cruising around our bay with a classic 1973 Johnson 4 hp 2 stroke motor. At the time of this video, new sails are being made at Doyle Sails in Huntington, NY. Through researching, I found that Philip L. Rhodes was the original designer of this boat in 1960 an the original builder was Atlantic Fiberglass , although this version was built by American Fiberglass Corp. in February of 1974. His 12 Meter Weatherly won the America’s Cup in 1962. David Stanton of American Sails, SC was also very helpful in providing information about this boat. I am hoping to deal with him soon for more parts for this classic sail boat. If you have any information you may be able to share or photographs or your own American Kingfisher III, that would be greatly appreciated. You may contact me at cdalego@aol.com. I hope by posting this I may inspire other King Fisher III owners to write about or film their boats as well. There is not much information to be found online at this point in time — they are almost forgotten about.
Oday Widgeon is very close to this design
look for us sailing out on the great South Bay of Long Island to Davis Park Fire Island or camping at Smith Point a Suffolk County Park campground
HAPPY SAILS TO YOU… until we meet again.
hope you enjoyed our little movie with the boat with a pirates flag jolly roger

NJ BOATERS ESCAPE RECESSION
Author: admin
The great recession of 2009 has been horrible for most businesses but there are a few bright spots. Movie viewership is up. Romance novel reading is up. And now add to that list, summer boating! In Red Bank, New Jersey Boat sellers report weak demand for big new boats, but people looking to fix up their existing boats is very strong. With gas prices down and dock slip rentals up, it looks like people have found a new way to escape all the bad economic news, at least for the summer!
AUDIO TEXT
There is no doubt, the recession has left its mark on the Red Bank area, but what about the local boating business?
Has it been caught up the Navesink River without a paddle? Or will local the maritime businessmen be able to ride out the economic tsunami?
If you just rent boat slips, like they do at The Molly Pitcher’s Inn or the River View Towers, you might think the recession has never really shown up.
Manny Carabel – Not here is hasn’t. Our Marina is full for another season and we currently have a waiting list.
and if you already own a boat, like Bob Englehardt, it doesn’t look like the recession keep you off the water this summer..
BOB: THE RECESSION HAS DEFINITELY CHANGED MY PORTFOLIO BUT IT HASN’T REACHED TO THE POINT WHERE I HAVE TO STOP boating…
But if you’re in the business of selling big new boats like Irwin Marine, chances are you’re caught in some pretty choppy seas…
JOHN MATTEO — WE’RE SELLING BOATS BUT WERE NOT SELLING BOATS AT ANY PROFIT.
The problem? The banks are making it tough to get a loan.
JOHN MATTEO – Before we just had to put a customer and put him in the right boat, send the loan application to the bank and get approval an hour later. Now it may take almost a week to get an approval back on it. And then they are asking for things they never asked for before. W2′s and paycheck stubs.
Luckily for owner Chan Irwin. what was lost in sales has been gained in other areas…
CHANNING IRWIN – ONE OF THE THINGS WE NOTICED WAS THAT WHEN SALES WENT DOWN SERVICE WENT UP… PEOPLE ARE FIXING UP THEIR OLD BOATS SO THEY CAN USE THEM.
Regardless of how bad the recession gets, Chan Irwin promises his business will keep doing what its been doing for more than 125 years.
JOHN MATTEO : WE’RE GOING TO HAVE A BOAT SHOW…
It may not be easy to sell new boats this summer, but many still think it will be a busy out on the water.
CHANNING IRWIN: IT APPEARS WE ARE GOING TO HAVE A GOOD SUMMER. PEOPLE ARE TIRED OF THE RECESSION AND PLAN TO GET OUT IN THE BOATS.
One other reason you might see more boaters this summer is lower fuel costs.
