Attach Your Mainsail in Seven Simple Steps!

Do you remember the last time you had the opportunity to bend on (attach) a mainsail to any sailboat? If you are anything like me, step aboard most small racing or cruising sailboats and the mainsail will already be bent on beneath the sail cover, ready to go. But if you want to learn to sail like a pro, take a minute to review the quick, easy steps to get a mainsail attached and hoisted. Follow these seven easy-to-learn sailing tips to learn this vital sailing skill that will help you become a better sailor.

1. Set the Sail Up for Easy Attachment

Haul the sail bag up on deck and place it next to the mast. It will be easier if you have a partner to work with. Open up the top of the bag and have your partner grab the bottom of the bag. Pull the sail out of the bag. Stand on the same side of the mast as your dominant hand. If you are right handed, stand on the right side of the mast. If left handed, stand on the left side of the mast. Move the sail to the other side of the mast. That way, the sail will stay out of the way of your feet as you attach it to the boom and mast .

2. Slide the Foot Into the Boom Slot

Begin with the foot. The clew feeds into the boom groove first. To locate the clew, look for a corner where a flat sail edge (the leech) joins an edge that contains a thick internal rope along the foot of the sail–called a “boltrope”. Unlock the boom gate at the forward end of the boom. Slide the boltrope, slides, or slugs into the boom slot. One person grabs and pulls the clew grommet to the back of the boom as the other person feeds the foot into the boom. After you’ve attached the foot to the boom, slide the boom gate pin through the tack grommet to secure it in place.

3. Attach the Sailboat Boom Outhaul

Find the outhaul shackle or outhaul line at the far end of the boom. Attach the outhaul to the clew ring. Look on the side of the boom to locate the bitter end of the outhaul. Pull hard on the outhaul to place tension along the foot of the mainsail. Cleat off the outhaul line to the boom cleat when done.

4. Clear and Bend on the Mainsail Halyard

Open the mainsail shackle and look all along the halyard to the top of the mast. You will often find that the mainsail halyard will be on the other side of shrouds or lazy jacks. Move the halyard away from these objects so that it forms a straight line up to the top of the mast. This insures that you’ll be able to raise the mainsail without getting fouled as you hoist it. Attach the halyard to one of the holes in the mainsail headboard. Double check that you’ve secured the shackle pin in place.

5. Hoist and Feed the Mainsail

Work with your partner to hoist the mainsail. One person will work the halyard while the other feeds the slides or slugs into the mast slot. Take care that you don’t miss a slide or slug. The person hoisting should watch the luff of the sail as it goes up the mast to check that no slides or slugs were missed. Also, check that the leech battens clear the lazy jacks, topping lift, and backstay. If the sail snags on something–stop, lower the sail a foot or so, and correct the problem.

6. Grind and Tension the Mainsail

Wrap the mainsail halyard line two to three times in a clockwise direction around the halyard winch. Pull on the halyard until you feel strong resistance. One person inserts the winch handle into the halyard winch and the other person holds the line with light to moderate tension. As you grind on the winch, watch the luff of the mainsail. Stop winching when you start to see a shallow vertical crease build close to the luff. Tie off the mainsail halyard and go to the next step.

7. Coil and Neaten the Halyard Line

Neaten up the extra mainsail halyard when done winching. Hold the line about 6″ from the cleat with your non-dominant hand. Coil the rest of the line clockwise with your dominant hand. As soon as you’re done, reach through the coil and pull the line near the cleat back through the coil. Twist it two or three times and push the eye over the top horn of the mast cleat. Now your mainsail halyard line will be ready to go without knots or jams the instant you need it!

Are Parrots good for living aboard a sailboat and offshore sailing?

I am planning on buying a sailboat and living aboard in the next year or so and am wondering about what types of pets would be good for sailing. You always see pirates with Parrots and I thought that there might be some reason, other than it being an exotic pet from distant lands, such as it is good for finding land, or they make good companions on long voyages because they can talk.

Idk what the best shipboard pet might be, but be aware that talking is not necessarily the same as companionship and parrots don’t converse they squawk sounds you can understand. Imo a basketball named Wilson would be a better companion (check out the Tom Hanks movie CastAway). Good luck on taking your great adventure; it’s truly something to look forward to! RJ
