Okanagan model sailboat association races their boats down by the lagoons in Kelowna. These model sailboats are fun to watch, and the way they knife through the water gives an indication of the speeds they attain. I wonder if there are model catamarans?

How much does a monohull sailboat heel and how much does a Catamaran heel in the middle of the ocean?
Would the extra stability of a Catamaran justify the extra cost do you think?

Great question…

I was a die hard monohull sailor for 30 years. At one point in my life you could not have dragged me onto a catamaran.

In 1997 my very best friend (whom I taught to sail years earlier in a monohull) bought a 48′ blue water sailing catamaran; and begged me to go with him from Galveston to Bimini… I did, and the first thing I did when I got back was start building my own. (I have always built my own).

I simply love the no heeling aspect… I have level floors and decks to walk on, level counter-tops, a bed that remains level with sheets, pillows and covers that remain on the bed and are not all on the floor when I want to go to bed. I love the fact that everything from my laptops to my books and beverages stay where I put them down. Everything in counters and on shelves stays in it’s place. Most of all I think, I love having my other hand back… You know, the one that’s been attached to the nearest hand rail for all these years…

Now, compare this to a life lived at a 30 degree angle off the horizon in a monohull, and the difference is simply overwhelming more enjoyable and comfortable in a catamaran.

Catamarans also offer a distinct speed advantage… One thing most sailors don’t realize, is that a vessel never maintains its performance speed crossing an ocean. If your sailboat has an average speed sailing around the harbor of 10 knots… crossing an ocean, you will do good to average 5 knots. The same is true with a catamaran – only a catamaran is typically 2 or 3 times faster then the same length monohull… so crossing an ocean, the additional speed is a dramatic welcome.

So, is the extra stability justify the cost? I certainly believe it does, and more… 30 degree heeling vs no heeling? Twice the speed! Level and uncluttered deck space! 100 times the comfort!
